South Dayi MP Rockson Etse Dafeamekpor says Ghana needs an infrastructure of the nature of the National Cathedral.
He noted that the country currently lacks a national spiritual centre, and the construction of a cathedral would be a valuable project for the country.
Speaking on JoyNews, Mr Dafeamekpor raised concerns about the chosen location and funding for the project, suggesting that the government is not fully committed to its completion.
“It has always been my position that the idea is good, but the grievance people have is that, because we have moved into an economic meltdown, it is not necessary.
"We should not be doing it at this hour, but it is something if we have and if we have the wherewithal to support it, it is good to have it.
"Looking at the sums of money involved, we should have seen the structure up, even if it is not completed.”
Despite a promise made by former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta that the National Cathedral would be completed by March 6, 2024, the construction progress remains at the foundation level.
Members of Parliament from the National Democratic Congress, led by North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, attempted a symbolic commissioning of the project.
The attempt of the MPs of the National Democratic Congress to symbolically commission the site was met with resistance from security personnel, who cited directives from higher authorities.
However, Mr Ablakwa made several demands.
"We are demanding full accountability for what happened to our $8,141,552. We are demanding that the board of trustees of the national cathedral be dissolved without delay.
"We are calling on all the prosecutor institutions to immediately commence the prosecution of all those who have caused this gross financial loss to the state,” he said.
