We need more resources to deal with flooding – NADMO

The Director of Communication of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), George Ayisi, is advocating for more resources to be allocated to his outfit before the heavy rains begin.

According to him, although NADMO has some relief items in its warehouses, it cannot adequately cater to emergencies.

Speaking on Joy News' The Pulse on April 23, he said “Government has been retooling us in terms of getting the equipment that we need to function properly like water pumping machine and all that, but resources in terms of relief supplies, there is more to be done.

The Communications Director explained that all four warehouses in Accra were not at full capacity, and depots in other parts of the country needed to be restocked. Until that is done, they are not fully prepared to handle flooding.

“We have four warehouses here in the capital and in all the sixteen regions we have depots where we do prepositioning of relief items.

“Our four warehouses are not completely filled to capacity and so when there is an emergency we need to get restocking and then the prepositioning too, we need to do prepositioning in all regional capitals before the rains sets in.

“We need to get more resources to be properly positioned to respond adequately to disaster matters,” he added.

Meanwhile, Mr Ayisi said NADMO has begun educating individuals residing in flood-prone areas on how to access safe havens in flood situations.

“Yes, NADMO we do our community engagements. We have identified places we call safe havens, especially flood-prone areas, and we have also sensitised people within the communities where those identified safe havens are and on how to access these safe havens.

"And so yes, these are engagements that go on within the localities and there is continuous engagement so the people know where the safe havens are and how to access them in times of the rains and flooding," he added.
