The next administration of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will provide Senior High Schools and tertiary institutions across the country with free wifi.
Speaking at the NPP manifesto launch, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia said this was to boost learning among students and broaden the scope of Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) education and research.
“The process has started and a contract has already been awarded. ECG is also levelling its fibre network across the country” Dr Bawumia revealed.
He stated that government is expecting the work on the free wifi initiative to be completed by the year 2021.
This comes after many students and schools were compelled to adopt online study methods to continue their academic work during the pandemic.
The party had initially promised to provide free wifi for schools in their 2016 manifesto with the help of the private sector.
However, after failing to implement the policy in their first term and realising the consequence of the coronavirus pandemic on eduction, the party is poised to initiate the project by 2021 when they are voted into power.
Meanwhile, reacting to the manifesto president of policy think tank IMANI Africa was happy about the measured tone of NPP's manifesto this time around.
"It wasn't a big bang. I was happy that sloganeering that we heard the last time is no more. Reality now has hit home."
