It was another week of blood as the country lost over 60 people to road accident in one night, while eight others butchered in another night by men suspected to be mentally unstable.

Monday- Water shortage in some parts of the country

Water shortage usually dominates the Month of January because of the Harmattan, but this year, the issue of Pneumococcal Meningitis dominated the news in the first month. And just halfway in the second month of February, water shortage became severe in some parts of the country.

Reports of water shortage in the Greater Accra, Western and Eastern regions started coming in on Monday, February 15.

Residents in these areas were scared of contracting the Cholera disease as some of them resorted to using polluted water for domestic and commercial activities.

They called on government to, as a matter of urgency, address the water situation before it gets out of hand.

The crisis forced pupils of Ahwiam Basic School at Ningo in the Greater Accra region to bath sea water before making their way to school.

They used the salty water because the community’s only source of water, a pond, has dried up.

The use of sea water to bath is causing some skin irritation; Joy News' Kwetey Nartey observed when he visited the area.

Wa Government Hospital saga

Also in the news on Monday was Wa Government Hospital. Patients who visited the hospital Monday morning were left to their fate as doctors and nurses there protested the appointment of a new Medical Superintendent.

Embattled Dr Gandau

Joy News' Rafiq Salam reported that some nurses and doctors were seen in the hospital premises but they were not attending to patients.

The doctors and nurses said their preferred candidate Dr. Chris Opoku Fofie - who is a Gynecologist at the hospital - has laboured enough and deserved the position.

Despite the demonstration on Wednesday, Dr Gandau was sworn in on Thursday.

Tuesday-Stabbing at KNUST

We woke up on Tuesday to hear about a stabbing incident at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

Two students of the University were stabbed in two separate incidents on Sunday.

The first incident was reported to have occurred around the Great Hall, near a residential block of the University Hall, also known as Katanga Hall.

And the second suffered a slash in the palm at the Unity Hall. Reports said the two were responding to treatment.

The incidents are being investigated by a collaborative effort of the National Security, Ghana Police Service, and KNUST security.

Ag IGP commends The Multimedia Group

On Tuesday, the acting Inspector General of Police, John Kudalor commended the Multimedia Group for a latest documentary “Brothers at War” done by Seth Kwame Boateng.

The documentary highlights the damage caused by an age-long chieftaincy conflict in Bunkpurugu in the Northern part of Ghana.

The acting IGP was optimistic the issues raised in the documentary can help facilitate the peace process in the conflict-ridden town.

Otabil rallies Ghanaians to be independent-minded

Then on Wednesday, came the story of Pastor Mensah Otabil encouraging Ghanaians to be independent-minded and resist the temptation to be content with supplies of minimal goods and services such as roads, water and electricity by the state.

“We can’t just be happy because a road has been tarred. We can’t just be happy that we didn’t have electricity now we have electricity. We can’t be happy with minimals”, the founder of the International Central Gospel Church said at a Springboard event organised by motivational speaker Albert Ocran.

He stressed that “citizens must have an appetite for better”. The pastor explained that he sensed the nation has entered into a period of depression.

Suspected JB Danquah murder remanded

Also on Wednesday, the suspected killer of late Abuakwa North MP, JB Danquah-Adu appeared in court and was remanded into police custody.

Daniel Asiedu who confessed to stabbing the MP was eager to explain his actions at the Accra Central Magistrate Court presided over by Stephen Owusu.

But he was restrained by the judge who told him, he will have the chance to tell his story but not on the day. The judge has ordered that Daniel Asiedu re-appear on 1 March 2016.

The 51-year old MP and benefactor of many, was murdered in cold blood at his residence on Tuesday, February 9.

NDC member stepped down from EC Steering Committee

Then later in the day, an NDC member, Dr. Karl Arhin, stepped aside from a Steering Committee set up by the Electoral Commission (EC).

His move came after the New Patriotic Party (NPP), accused the EC of appointing NDC members on the committee.

Dozens killed in Kintampo-Tamale road accident

We thought the day was going to end on that political note until the sad news of the over 60 people who were killed in Kintampo Tamale road accident came in.

Initial reports said 53 people died when a Metro Mass bus and a truck rammed into each other in a fatal accident at Kintampo in the Brong Ahafo Region at about 8:00pm.

Twenty-three other people had sustained severe injuries and were receiving treatment at the Kintampo Government Hospital, police said.

The truck was believed to be traveling from Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso and was heading to Accra.

THURSDAY

On Thursday, discussions about the road disaster continued as the death toll rose. Some of the injured passengers were airlifted to other hospitals for further treatment. By close of the day, the death toll had risen to 63.

President John Dramani Mahama sent condolences to the families of the accident victims.

One week observation of JB Danquah-Adu

The one week observation of the late Abuakwa North MP was held at the Police Social Center.

It saw the likes of Vice President Kwesi Amissah Arthur, 2016 Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo and some other political giants.

Then on Friday was the news of the deranged killings.

A total of eight people were killed by suspected mentally unstable persons in three separate incidents across the country.

At Assin Akrofuom in the Central Region, a middle-aged man suspected to be mentally unstable killed four members of his immediate family and their landlord.

The suspect, Kwasi Ganu, is reported to have been released recently after serving time for a criminal offense.

And at Jamasi in the Ashanti region, a mentally ill man allegedly killed three elderly persons.

Joy News reporter, Erastus Asare Donkor, said the police searched for the suspected murderer who they eventually arrested in the bush.

He was arraigned before court much to the disappointment of the residents who wanted instant justice.

And at Techiman in the Brong Ahafo region, a 28-year-old man believed to be mentally challenged wounded two people who are said to be in critical condition at the Holy Family Hospital.
