The management of Gumah FM has vowed to take legal action if they are not satisfied with the response from the National Media Commission (NMC) regarding the recent shutdown of the station.
Speaking to Accra-based Citi FM on Thursday, February 20, the General Manager of Gumah FM, Nurudeen Gumah, stated that the station will first seek clarification from the National Communication Authority (NCA) on the exact reasons for its closure.
He stated that if the explanation is unsatisfactory, management will escalate the issue and ultimately take it to court.
“We are going to write to the National Communication Authority about the reason behind them shutting us down; we will also petition the National Media Commission to look into the matter on whether they have other options for us now.
"If we are not satisfied with the outcome then we have no other option than to go to the court,” Mr Gumah asserted.
His comment comes after the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George ordered the immediate shutdown of the radio station in Bawku following the urgent national security concerns raised by the Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC).
The directive comes after an emergency REGSEC meeting held on February 11, 2025, where intelligence reports indicated that Gumah FM was being used as a platform to incite violence, disrupt public order, and escalate tensions in Bawku and parts of the North East Region.
Citing Section 13(1)(e) of the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775), the government directed the National Communications Authority (NCA) to enforce the station’s closure in the interest of national security and public order.
The station’s management has also condemned the shutdown, describing it as "politically motivated", and has challenged the Communication Ministry to provide concrete evidence of any wrongdoing.
“We just saw a letter that they are closing us down, that is why we believe that they need to provide us with evidence because we do our programmes and record them with disclaimers, so if they have sighted a specific thing that we have done, that they believe is inciting violence or hate speech, then it becomes necessary for them to make the evidence available to us, that you have done this so we have to shut you down. But they have not done that and I sincerely believe that it is either a political witch hunt or somebody somewhere wants Gumah FM shut down," Gumah added.
