The Wenchi Municipal Assembly in the Bono region has cleared two refuse dumpsites which are considered a health threat to the host communities within the municipality.
The age-old refuse heaps were cleared at Buoku and Beposo communities as part of the assembly's comprehensive Water and Sanitation Policy Master Plan to tackle sanitation-related problems in the municipality.
The Wenchi Municipal Assembly, in collaboration with Zoomlion Ghana Limited and the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development, executed the project to ease the suffering of the people.

During an inspection of the cleared dumpsites, Wenchi Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Alexander Obour Damoah, reiterated the assembly's resolve to address the sanitation challenges and promote good health and wellbeing in the municipality.
He observed that the over decades-old refuse heaps have hindered the development of the two communities.
"Due to the strategic locations of the refuse dumpsites, the stench alone has been a nuisance to the community whilst posing serious health risks to them," Mr Damoah said.

The MCE emphasised the assembly's continuous pursuance of programmes geared towards improving the living standards of the people in the municipality.
He stated that the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development approved the clearance of the refuse dumps.
The Bono Regional Coordinator of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Emmanuel Abesiga, hinted at the company's plans to provide refuse containers at designated places with personnel to supervise the dumping of refuse into the containers in the communities at a fee.

The Assembly Members for the Beposo and Buoku Electoral Areas, Lawrence Abrefa and Mustapha Mohammed, said the removal of the rubbish heap from their communities was a much-needed relief.
Community members of Buoku and Beposo expressed delight at the clearing of the refuse dumps but called for its sustainability.
