Energy expert and former Chief Executive of the Volta River Authority (VRA), Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobby has described the rate of decline in the level of water in the Akosombo Dam as precarious and one that requires some drastic measures. The level of water in the dam has been receding in recent times to some unprecedented. Today’s level of 235.70 feet is lower than the previous lowest level of 235.76 it reached in 1984.VRA officials have already indicated that a more intensified load shedding programme would have to be introduced as they manage the dam on one turbine instead of the two turbines being operated now.But Dr. Wereko-Brobby told Joy News the situation is much more critical than that. He is calling for some tough decisions to be taken to save the dam, but stopped short of asking for the dam to be shut completely.“Even if it started raining today, if we go by historic records I don’t think we would get more than may be between 12 and maximum 24 foot rise and that could be dangerous to return to the full operation of the dam.”Dr. Wereko-Brobby called for the preservation of the lake as one of the measures to forestall a recurrence of the energy crisis.
