The Municipal Chief Executive for the West Akim Municipality, Seth Oduro Boadu, has assured traders that the central business market will be reopened on Thursday.
The decision was taken after an all-inclusive dialogue between the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) and the leadership of the various market associations in the municipality.
During the emergency meeting, the MCE and traders agreed that fish and meat sellers will temporarily relocate to the Methodist Primary School Park in Asamankese, whereas traders of food items remain at the central business arena.
He noted that the measures would permit traders and customers practice the safety measures particularly, social distancing, to help mitigate the spread of the pandemic in the municipality.
“We have tasked the engineers to go and demarcate those areas so that the distancing is adhered to.
“To be on a equal pedal, we have decided to use today [Tuesday] and tomorrow [Wednesday] to do the relocation and demarcation for the fish sellers, so that on Thursday, all markets will be opened including the newly allocated market for fish sellers,” he explained.
Meanwhile, the MCE has inaugurated a nine member security taskforce to oversee the compliance of the precautionary measures.
He admonished residents of the municipality to strictly follow the terms of reference or be dealt with in accordance to the law.
The traders' leadership on their part, expressed their appreciation to the MCE for coming up with bold and proactive measures in managing the situation and called on their members to comply with the measures .
They further promised to adhere to all the precautionary and safety measures to help combat the spread of the virus.
A temporal shutdown of the central business by the MCE came in force following noncompliance of the Covid-19 precautionary and safety measures.
