Communications Director for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea is baffled at the number of ministers and deputies to serve in the Mahama-led administration. He said it is intriguing that a social democratic party like the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has abandoned its 'lean government' promise in the wake of the socio-economic crisis in the country. The NDC in its 2008 manifesto promised to establish a lean government if given the nod to serve the country. The ruling party then in opposition accused the erstwhile Kufuor administration which had 82 ministers of profligacy. But years down the line, the NDC has been caught in similar web with President Mahama’s appointees numbering about 85. The presidency has attempted to give reasons for the large numbers but a section of the general public believes the number will deplete the national purse. Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Monday, Nana Akomea said what Ghana needs is institutional reforms and not illogical ministerial appointments. According to him, achieving effective and efficient government can be achieved by cutting out ostentatious and profligate expenditure –a situation he says the Mahama-led administration has failed woefully. Nana Akomea could not fathom why President Mahama wants to maintain a large government when in fact the ministers in the past four years have not produced results. "For the past four years with these ministers at post the country is experiencing erratic power supply, water rationing and gas shortages" he added. He described as needless most of the designation given the ministers and called for immediate realignment to ensure their efficiency. The NPP man intimated that nemesis has caught up with the NDC which campaign vigorously against the NPP for supposedly having a large government. Nana Akomea urged government to ensure fiscal discipline and work assiduously to salvage the country’s economy.
