Despite his imperfections, former President John Agyekum Kufuor is a great blessing to Ghana, the Member of Parliament for Asokwa, Maxwell Kofi Jumah has said. Mr Kufuor, according to him, is blessed with great ideas and is full of wisdom. The ex-president will break the ground for the multi-million dollar John Agyekum Kufuor Centre for Leadership, Governance and Development project Tuesday at the University of Ghana and proceed to the Ashanti Region to undertake a similar project at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. Before his exit in 2009 as head of state, Mr Kufuor requested for USD 1million contribution of seed money to establish a presidential institute or foundation. He was however bastardised by the media and political opponents who argued that the nation was not in position to offer Mr Kufuor such a huge amount. But he has managed to raise some funding to see through his project. Contributing to discussions on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo Tuesday, Kofi Jumah expressed joy that the former president, in spite of the difficulties he encountered, did not allow his dream of setting up such a foundation to die and praised him for finding a way to make that dream a reality. “Kwame, to be honest… (he, Kufuor) is my hero,” Jumah said, adding that he sometimes asks himself why God blessed Mr Kufour in that manner. He said the foundation was significantly important because the nation currently does not have a better record system of issues of governance, recounting his disappointment when he googled for the inaugural speech of Dr Hilla Liman but realised to his amazement there was no record of it on the internet. The Vice President of the Alliance For Accountable Governance (AFAG), Abu Ramadan, could also not hide his admiration for the ex-president when he stated that he is a blessing not only for Ghana but to the whole African continent. He was happy that Mr Kufour has “realised that a chunk of our history is gone” and is taking steps to preserve what is left for the benefit of future generations. Mr Kofi Adams, spokesperson for the Rawlingses, added that Mr Kufuor’s idea was a good one and advocated that it is maintained so that all outgoing presidents will leave something behind for the benefit of the nation.
