A 35-year-old unemployed woman at Osu-Re, Madam Janet Whyte, who could not contain the unfaithfulness of her boyfriend and so decided to end it all by committing suicide, is now in the firm grips of the law for attempted suicide.
The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) in Accra, Inspector Irene Oppong, told The Mirror that Madam Whyte claimed she was owing a lot of people, while the ‘husband’ refused to look after her and her children and life was becoming unbearable for her so she decided to commit suicide.
Inspector Oppong said Madam Whyte was the girlfriend of one Mr Sampson Okaitey, a driver at Osu-Re.
She said the two had three children, but they were not married, although they had lived together for the past seven years.
About seven months ago, Okaitey informed Madam Whyte that he was being ejected from the room in which they were living and requested that she should temporarily move and join her family at Suhum in the Eastern Region until he found another accommodation.
The PRO said since Madam Whyte did not hear from him for a long time, she decided to visit him to find out if there was any problem.
When she went to him, she met another woman in his room, and when she attempted to enter the room, he prevented her.
She said not long after the new-found girlfriend came out of the room, she locked the door and left with the keys in the company of Okaitey.
In their absence, Madam Whyte was said to have forcibly opened the door and entered the room to wait for her boyfriend.
Later in the day, he returned from work with his new girlfriend and noticed that Madam Whyte had forced the door open and entered.
He demanded an explanation from her, and when he did not receive any reply, he pounced on her.
The PRO said on the following day when he and his girlfriend were away, Madam Whyte took a rope and tied it around her neck to take her life, but the household heard her screaming and went to her rescue. They untied the rope and sent her to the police station.
Okaitey was later arrested and charged for assault, while Madam Whyte was also charged with attempted suicide.
