United Nations (UN) Senior Mediation Advisor and Former Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister, Emmanuel Habuka Bombande has said that it is encouraging to see more women take up leadership positions in Ghana’s political landscape.
According to him, women are key assets when it comes to political leadership and conflict resolution and thus should be encouraged to be active participants in all spheres of politics.
He made these comments on JoyNews’ Personality Profile, Friday, when speaking about the three women flagbearers on Election 2020's ballot paper.
They are; Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings of the National Democratic Party (NDP), Bridgette Dzogbenuku of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) and Akua Donkor of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP).
This is the first time in the history of Ghana, 3 women have qualified to appear on the ballot paper as flagbearers for their respective parties.
Mr. Bombande urged women in politics to be actively engaged in issues not only during the election period but throughout their careers as politicians.
He said: “As I said, participation of women and gender equality must be across board. But I also want women to take politics very seriously and be very actively engaged. I don’t want a situation in which you’re silent and because it is election, then all of a sudden, Ghanaians see you.
“Because accountability means we should be active throughout the period that leads into an election and not just when it is bout time for elections. So I’m happy that women are quite engaged.”
