A heavy police presence has been observed at the headquarters of the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra as security has been significantly reinforced.
The exact reason for the sudden move remains unclear.
Multiple police officers have been deployed to the premises, with more arriving in batches to secure the area.
The Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, DCOP Duuti Tuaruka, was also briefly present to assess the situation and interact with personnel on the ground.
Speculations suggest that the heightened security may be linked to the expected arrival of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who is scheduled to visit the EOCO office at 3:00 PM.
However, authorities have not confirmed this.
The development follows Thursday’s protest by the Minority caucus and supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who stormed the EOCO headquarters to demand a review of the bail conditions for NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Wontumi has been in custody for over 48 hours, with the NPP members describing his GH₵50 million bail as "excessive and unfair." The protesters vowed to remain at the EOCO office until his release, but dispersed after about three hours.
As tensions linger, the heavy police deployment has raised questions about whether further demonstrations are anticipated or if the move is part of broader security measures.
JoyNews will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates.
Meanwhile, Minority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyire constituency, Frank Annoh Dompreh, has claimed that the NPP's Ashanti Regional Chairman has refused to eat in protest against his detention conditions, describing the supposed hunger strike as a desperate measure amid what he terms “shocking” treatment by EOCO officials.
