The World Bank under the second phase of the Urban Environmental and Sanitation Programme (UESP II), is providing more than four million dollars for the execution of sanitation projects in the Tamale Metropolis. The projects comprise the construction of seven public sanitation facilities including water closets, for the Tamale Central and Aboabo markets. Mohammed Amin Adam, Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive, announced this at the first and second ordinary sessions of the Assembly in Tamale. He said 32 school sanitation facilities will be constructed in some selected primary and junior secondary schools in the metropolis, while 10 public toilets would be built for communities at Tishigu, Ward One, Builpela and Lamashegu. The MCE announced that the Assembly would construct about 50 standard toilet facilities in the metropolis this year and urged the residents to cooperate with the Assembly and put the facilities into good use.He said the Assembly spent more than two billion cedis last year to fence toilet facilities, construct a solid waste holding bay and procured sanitation equipment to ensure proper waste disposal in the Metropolis.Mr Adam said a number of roads including those leading to hotels in the city, were being rehabilitated at a cost of 43 billion cedis.A new road would be constructed to link the new stadium to the main Water Works road at a cost of 10 billion cedis, while the first phase of the street lighting project had been awarded on contract at a cost of 4.9 billion cedis.The Metropolitan Chief Executive said the Assembly was spending one billion cedis to procure electric poles for distribution to the rural communities to provide them with electricity to help improve on their living conditions.He announced that cumulative allocation between 2006 and 2007 from the central government to the Assembly stood at 100 billion cedis and commended the government for giving due attention to Tamale.Source: GNA
