The World Bank has initiated an ambitious plan to transform Ghana’s fisheries sector to significantly boost its contribution to the economy.
According to the Bank, the output of the sector is rather low despite the over-fishing that is taking place. The plan hopes to greatly improve the fortunes of fisher-folk by improving the techniques they use in processing their catch.
Country Director Ishac Diwan explained that under the scheme, fishermen will be licensed and each license will be worth GH¢20,000 to GH¢30,000.
“Once you have a fixed number of fishermen then you can invest in them to improve their productivity,” he said.
Mr. Diwan said the licensing of small players will also ensure that they are easily identified and supported to grow.
He said fishermen need to be supported to add value to the fish they catch.
