The Abudu family in Yendi has defied an order by the Northern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) to discontinue the celebrations of funerals in the Yendi municipality until after the celebration of the Damba Festival. Damba is celebrated under the lunar calendar by the Dagombas, Mamprusis, Gonjas, Nanumbas and Walas. The Northern REGSEC issued the directive after meeting with the two chieftaincy gates in Yendi last week. The council also ordered that the festival be celebrated only at the Gbewaa Palace. The decision was aimed at averting potential violence. However, the Abudus last night engaged in dancing and drumming at the Bolen-Yanga’s palace during a funeral ceremony. Northern regional correspondent Mahama Shaibu has more. Meanwhile outgoing Deputy Northern Regional Minister, Moses Mabengba, is reported to be meeting with members of the Regional Security Council to resolve the matter. The Damba is categorised into three main festivals, namely Somo Damba, Naa Damba and Belkusi Damba. The significance of the festival is to commemorate the birthday of the Holy Prophet of Islam. During the celebration of the festival, the people pray and fast and ride on horseback, amidst drumming and dancing.
