The Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University for Development Studies (UDS), Professor David Millar has revealed that more people are now migrating from the southern part of the country to the northern part to seek greener pastures.
He told Joy News the migrants, mostly the youth are attracted to the booming small scale mining industry and lumbering there, with some migrating to the north to engage in commerce.
Prof. Millar who could not readily provide statistics to back the trend said students from UDS who normally spend their third trimester (eight weeks) in some selected communities of the north have corroborated his view.
Prof. Millar said the north-south migration could be attributed to the fact that “the youth from the south are more aggressive in their entrepreneurial spirit than those from the north.”
Meanwhile the drafting committee of the National Migration Policy is advocating the creation of a full ministry for migration to address migration challenges in the country.
A Consultant to the committee, Prof. Stephen Kankye, said the proposed ministry will facilitate the implementation of the policy, which is currently at its third drafting stage.
