Eleven people were killed when a Nissan Urvan bus collided with a Nissan Caravan near Essuerkyir on the Winneba-Mankessim road on Monday night as the nation gears up for Easter. Ten of them, including the driver of the Nissan caravan died on the spot while the eleventh person died on admission at the Central Regional Hospital. Three others are on admission at the Central Regional and the Saltpond hospitals while two were treated and discharged. Those on admission have been identified as Christina Kossi from Togo, Christopher Gyan and Isaac Quansah. It took the combined effort of the personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service and the police to remove the victims from the mangled vehicles. The accident occurred just hours after the Central Regional Police and the National Road Safety Commission had mounted a road safety campaign to prevent road accident during and after the Easter festivities. Briefing the Ghanaian Times, the Mfantsiman District Police Commander, Superintendent Emmanuel Narh-Odonkor, said the driver of the Urvan bus travelling from Accra to Cape Coast was attempting to overtake an articulated truck when it collided with the Nissan Caravan bus which was from Mankesim to Saltpond. Superintendent Narh-Odonkor said, the driver of the Urvan bus, Gambo Haruna, hit the side of the truck and lost control of his vehicle before running into the oncoming vehicle.
