The 9^th season of the Big Brother Africa reality show has kicked off in Johannesburg, South Africa Sunday after an initial hitch forced the organisers to postpone its September 7 launch.

The September 7 launch date was changed after the Big Brother Africa (Hotshot) Houses, in the Sasani Studios in Johannesburg, were burnt to the ground on September 3.

Due to the hitches, Endemol, organisers of the realty show, disclosed through the show host, IK, that this season’s Big Brother Africa will last for 63 days.

The 63 days makes this season’s show the shortest in the history of the reality show which started in 2003.

In 2003, the first season, Big Brother Africa 1 lasted for 106 days. The second season lasted for 98 days while Big Brother Africa 3, Big Brother Africa 4 (Revolution), Big Brother Africa 5 (All-Stars), Big Brother Africa 6 (Amplified), Big Brother Africa 7 (StarGame!), and Big Brother Africa 8 (The Chase) all lasted for 91 days.

In all 26 housemates from 13 countries – Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, Zambia, Uganda, Namibia, Rwanda, and Malawi - will battle out for the grand prize of $300,000.

IK, backed by five female dancers, opened the show with an interesting performance. The show also witnessed exciting performances from Emmy Gee ft AB Crazy & Dj Dimplez Rands and Nairas, Diamond Platnumz, Cassper Nyovest and Davido.

The 26 housemates put on a talent performance were they were judged by studio guests.

The results from the talent show, Big Brother announced, means that Tanzania’s Laveda who had 85.0% is the first Head of House for this season’s show and is also immune from possible eviction next week.

The remaining 25 housemates are up for possible eviction come next week.
