A BMW vehicle on Friday morning ran into over one hundred contingent of police recruits from the Eastern Regional Police Training School, who were going to keep fit in Koforidua, injuring 28 of them. The MTTU Commander in charge of the Eastern Region Chief Superintendent James Sarfo Peprah, told newsmen that the incident happened at around 5:30 am on Friday 29 June,2012. Chief Superntendent James Sarfo Peprah said upon reaching the Railways Police Station near the Regional Coordinating Council, a BMW car with registration number GW 5601 P over took three vehicles on the road and ran into them. He said all attempts by the keep fit instructor to stop the driver proved futile as the driver could not reduce his speed and ran into the recruits. Five recruits whose names were given as Isaac Gyamena 25 years, Tutus Noah 25 years, Kissinger Arthur 24 years, Abugri Ali 25 years and Oppong Kennedy 24 years were severely injured. They sustained major injures at the head, legs hands among other parts of their body. 23 recruits also sustained minor injuries and have all been admitted at the Eastern Region Hospital in Koforidua. The five who are in critical conditions are being prepared for transfer to the Police hospital in Accra. Meanwhile, the driver of the vehicle Mr. Joseph Osei Darkwah is in the police grips for further investigations. The MTTU Commander James Sarfo Peprah told journalist that, a test conducted on the driver indicates that he was not driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. The Eastern Regional Minister Mr. Victor Smith also visited the victims at the hospital and ordered the police to prepare the driver for court.
