Editor-in-chief of the Crusading Guide news paper is questioning the rationale for announcing the arrests of arsonists when investigations have not been concluded.
Kweku Baako Jnr said the announcement by the deputy Information and media relations Minister Murtala Mohammed on the arrests of arsonists has been hasty.
Murtala Mohammed in confirming the arrests, said the President's suspicion that arsonists may be behind the recent fires has been vindicated.
But speaking on Newsfile, Kweku Baako Jnr who is an avowed critic of the NDC, said he is “cynical” when government spokespersons as well as the president blame the recent spate of fires on arson when they are yet to provide any substantial evidence to back their claims.
Some of Accra's busy markets and others in Kumasi have recently been turned into desolate places of burnt remains.
A member of the NDC legal team, Abraham Amaliba, who was also a panel member on Newsfile also gave credence to the arrests.
He said the suspects are still being “screened” and will soon be prosecuted.
Former Attorney General Ayikoi Otoo who was also on the show, wondered how suspected arsonists will now have to be screened.
“Were they arrested in a swoop?” he questioned.
Agreeing in part with the views shared by Ayikoi Otoo, the Crusading Guide newspaper editor said government has a lot more questions to answer on the issue.
He said the government must tell Ghanaians who these suspects are; which of the fires they are linked to; which of the fires are accidental and which are deliberate?
He said all these questions needed to be answered and if the government was not ready with answers, it ought not to have made any announcement on arrest of arsonists.
Kweku Baako Jnr said the President, his ministers and other government functionaries are not entitled to be speculating on sensitive matters such as this, having already announced a ¢25,000 reward for information that will lead to the arrest of arsonists.
He said government has 48 days to arraign these suspected arsonists before court and that is where their “inadequacy and insufficiency” relative to their investigations will be exposed.
