Lauryn Hill has officially served her 3 month long prison sentence for tax evasion.
According to TMZ, Hill was released early Friday morning from the minimum security Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut.
The former 'Fugees' singer has been incarcerated since July 8th 2013 for not paying tax of more than $1.8 million from her earned income between 2005 and 2007.
When her tax troubles surfaced she instantly wrote a lengthy essay on her Tumblr account explaining that she paid her taxes for years but only stopped when she wanted to raise her children and step out of the limelight.
In the long-winded post, Hill targeted the manipulating music industry and how it twisted her vision. An extract from the post read;
"My intention has always been to get this situation rectified. When I was working consistently without being affected by the interferences mentioned above, I filed and paid my taxes. This only stopped when it was necessary to withdraw from society, in order to guarantee the safety and well-being of myself and my family".
The 38 year old first found fame in the 90s as a member of the hip-hop band 'The Fugees ' and her debut solo studio album 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill' (1998) earned 5 Grammy awards.
Before her arrest the R&B singer was working on new music and celebrated her release from prison by dropping the already recorded track 'Consumerism' on her tumblr page, she posted a message explaining the single;
"Consumerism is part of some material I was trying to finish before I had to come in. We did our best to eek out a mix via verbal and emailed direction, thanks to the crew of surrogate ears on the other side. Letters From Exile is material written from a certain space, in a certain place. I felt the need to discuss the underlying socio-political, cultural paradigm as I saw it. I haven't been able to watch the news too much recently, so I'm not hip on everything going on. But inspiration of this sort is a kind of news in and of itself, and often times contains an urgency that precedes what happens. I couldn't imagine it not being relevant. Messages like these I imagine find their audience, or their audience finds them, like water seeking its level."
Hopefully this is a sign for her fans that she is looking to release more new material in the near future.
