Just days before Nigerian artiste, Burna Boy was set to take to the stage in SA, organisers of the Africa Unite concert have announced the artist has been withdrawn and concerts in Cape Town and Tshwane cancelled.

In a release on Wednesday, November 20, Phambila Media and Play Network stated that the decision was made after “extensive engagement with Burna Boy’s management team.”

“The decision to cancel the Africans Unite Concert comes after the call from the Tshwane Entertainment Collective to boycott the Africans Unite concert in Tshwane. With the increasing threats of violence from other unfortunate segments of the public and without any government intervention, Phambili Media and Play Network Africa were prompted to take the threats and warnings seriously, as the safety of all artists and attendees could not be guaranteed,” the statement contained.

The award-winning Afrobeats sensation was scheduled to headline the event which would come off  November 23.

Burna Boy’s inclusion in the artistes line-up, faced massive criticism after he pledged in a tweet in September never to set foot in South Africa until the government performed a “miracle” amid the rise in xenophobic attacks.

After his comments, hundreds of South Africans have called for a cancellation of the show and the artiste boycotted until he apologised to the nation.

Meanwhile, Economic Freedom Fighters leader, Julius Malema, socialite Babalwa Mneno and several other people have defended Burna.

The Nigerian musician recently announced that he would donate earnings from the Africa Unite concert to victims of the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
