Some 75 farming communities in the Ketu District in the Volta Region have each been provided with a borehole as part of medium solution to their water problems over the years.
Many of the wells, except a few have been fitted with motors and power generators.
The project which cost more than a million dollars, was sponsored by an American philanthropist, William Kenneth Wood, Chief Executive Officer of Lifetime Wells, a U.S-based non-governmental organisation specialized in bore hole drilling.
At a durbar of the chiefs and people of the area to commission the project on Friday at Wudoaba, Mr Wood was also made a development chief under the name Togbe Agbetsi in appreciation of his kind gesture to the people.
Mr Kofi Dzamesi, Volta Regional Minister, in a citation, said Mr Wood's "selfless and kind gesture would, no doubt, contribute positively towards the improvement of the quality of lives in the recipient communities".
He said many communities had suffered from bilharzias and guinea worm diseases for many years as a result of drinking impure water.
He commended Mr Wood for supporting pupils of Penyifedo and Zukpe Basic schools in the district with 300 pieces of school uniform and large number of footwear.
Mr Dzamesi asked the people to maintain the facilities to prolong their life span.
Togbe Amenya Fiti, V, Paramount Chief of the Aflao Traditional Area, who performed the ceremony to make Mr Wood, chief, said it was an important gesture of appreciation and to establish solid friendship between him and the communities.
Mr Justice Cudjoe, Ketu District Chief Executive (DCE), said the project had greatly eased work on the district assembly to eliminate waterborne diseases in the district.Source: GNA
