A woman believed to be in her early 50s has been sentenced to death by a Cape Coast High Court presided over by Justice Erasmus Gyinae for poisoning her husband. A unanimous decision by the jury had asked her to choose between hanging, torture or lethal injection. The convict, Adwoa Badu who lived with her husband, Kwame Saah and rival, Ama Sakyiwah at Brofoyedur in Anomabo in the Mfantseman District of the Central Region was said to have warned the husband to wait and see her next action after he had called her a hopeless woman. A Principal State Attorney, Mrs. Hanna Taylor who presented the facts, said the two had a heated quarrel leading to insults from both parties with the deceased calling the accused a hopeless woman a fortnight before the man's death. That did not go down well with Adwoa Badu and she warned she would teach the husband a lesson. Earlier reports said the accused who was the second wife had asked her husband to break up with the first wife, Ama Sakyiwah. Mrs. Taylor said the accused poisoned the food she had prepared for the husband that very evening. She continued that the unsuspecting husband ate a chunk of the food and left some for the first wife but the deceased started complaining of a severe stomach upset and abdominal pain after he had finished eating. The prosecutor said the deceased had severe diarrhoea and was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Ama Sakyiwah who endured severe stomach upset and abdominal pain and diarrhoea was however treated and discharged from the hospital. During police interrogation the accused, who had married the deceased for seven (7) years confessed to poisoning the food. Meanwhile, counsel for the convict, Paa Kwesi Apeatse says he will appeal against the decision since an autopsy report revealed no poison in the deceased's body. Source: The Ghanaian Observer
