The NPP primaries to elect parliamentary candidates for the December 2008 election continue to register turbulent incidents.
Aggrieved party members are accusing some regional and constituency executives of favouritism and fanning conflicts. Some party members have been compelled by the circumstances to file for court injunctions against the primaries.
One of such hot spots is the Nkawkaw Constituency in the Eastern Region where an aspirant, Mr. Seth Adjei Baah (alias Shaaba) was informed of his disqualification from the primaries by the party’s National Chairman, Mr. Mac Manu, without so much as an explanation.
When the media broke the news of Shaaba’s disqualification, his supporters marched through the principal streets of the town which nearly resulted in mayhem.
Under the circumstances, one of the polling station chairmen in the constituency, Mr. George Alhassan, filed for a court injunction to restrain the party from holding the primary which was scheduled for last Saturday, May 17.
Explaining his action in an interview with Adom Kasiebo’s Yaa Serwah on Monday morning, Mr. Alhassan said the supporters were very angry and didn’t want the violence that characterized the Berkwai primaries to be repeated in Nkawkaw.
Mr. Alhassan is blaming regional and national executives for the controversy surrounding the primaries, accusing them of favouritism.
He also accused the incumbent MP for Nkawkaw, Mr. Okerchire Adusah of boasting that he will be elected unopposed even though he has not done anything for the constituency for all the three consecutive times that he has been in parliament.
Mr. Alhassan did not mince words in attacking leading members of the party who he said are fronting for the incumbent MP, adding that if the party leaders think that they need him in parliament more than at the constituency then they are ready to vote him out for the party to employ his services at parliament.
