All week, I've been telling you about angels. They are such a central part of the Christmas Story. Apart from being in practically every image, greeting card and gift wrapper, angels feature so prominently in the Christmas story itself. An angel appears to Mary, then to her cousin, and then the shepherds... each time, with a crucial message that heralds the key moments of the story.
Why though? Why were there so many angels fluttering about in Bethlehem and its environs during that particular period? That is what I want us to talk about this Christmas morning.Â
So what do we know about angels? Well, we know they are created by God, just like He created us, but they are NOT us. According to the Bible, there are hundreds of millions of them, and they all praised and worshipped God long before He ever created humans. They also possess free will and the ability to choose between right and wrong - as Satan demonstrated when he switched sides - but they have abilities and powers that we don't, and are credited with wings and the ability to fly. Also, according to the book of Job, God made each angel individually. They do not reproduce like humans do.
So in other words, angels are just like us, but with upgraded features... and they existed before we did. So why did God even feel the need to create us? This question has kept me up many a night.
I still don't technically have an answer, but mulling over that existential question has led me to another insight. I have now come to understand how even the most seemingly pointless creations have immense value.Â
Biologists tell us that if the humble bumblebee goes extinct, all living things will die soon after. Now, i can't immediately see why the absence of bees should matter to the existence of say, cockroaches, but if the scientists are right, and, whether they know it or not, cockroaches cannot live without bees.
Our leaders often neglect and overlook the citizens, but as this election has taught us, just 16 faceless voters can determine the destiny of a high-and-mighty politician.Â
Do you know the name of the person who cleans your office? How about the man who changes the lightbulbs in your school? Who is the woman who sells you plantain chips in traffic? Have you ever seen the person who cleans the glass covers of the traffic lights at your junction? These are the people who you probably don't think of, let alone care about, the people who don't matter in your world, but without them, your world would come crashing down.
Being in the media, my colleagues and I often bear the brunt of the criticism, not only from the politicians, but from you, our beloved listeners, and sometimes, from those who don't even watch or listen to us. Our job is such that all our mistakes are made in the public glare, so people sometimes tend to believe they could do our jobs and do them much better. I have often read comments about how useless the mainstream media is, and how social media will soon replace journalism.Â
It's easy to believe you don't matter - especially when you look around you and it seems you are surrounded by people who believe they are far more "important" than you. But try and remember that God had angels - angels o - yet He still created Man and Woman. And at this time of the year, you really have no excuse to belittle yourself or feel unimportant - not when today marks the day God placed so much premium on you, that he sent his own son to live and die to save you.
It's Christmas Day today, and the one message i want to share with you is that you matter. You matter to the world, you matter to the nation, you matter to your community, you matter to your employers you matter to your family, and you matter to me. We may never have met, and you may never have called in to our show or attended our events, but I know for a fact that we would be nothing if you didn't choose Joy every day. So on this all-important occasion, I want to say thank you for making me exist, for making me useful, and for giving me a purpose.
My name is Kojo Yankson, and even if you don't know why God made you, He does.
Good Morning, GHANAFO!
