The Lions of Tamale had their eyes on the prey — and once they pounced, there was little escape. Tamale SHS tore through sister school Kalpohin SHS and Wenchi Methodist SHS in the Preliminary stage, turning what began as a close contest into a commanding victory to book their place in the One-Eighth stage of the 2026 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ).
The opening round offered little between Tamale SHS and Kalpohin SHS, with just two points separating the sister schools. Tamale SHS led 19-17, while Wenchi Methodist had nine points. But the Lions began pulling away in Round Two, adding 18 points to reach 37 points, while Kalpohin SHS moved to 19 points and Wenchi Methodist to 11 points.
Round Three saw Tamale SHS and Kalpohin SHS both add nine points, leaving the Lions on 46 points and Kalpohin on 28 points, with Wenchi Methodist on 17 points. Tamale then produced its biggest burst in Round Four, adding 16 points to reach 62 points and stretching the gap over Kalpohin to 21 points. Wenchi Methodist was on 24 points.
The Lions also produced a perfect run in the True or False segment, answering all eight questions correctly to claim the Jupay Clean Sheet Prize.
The final round simply confirmed their dominance as the Lions added six points to finish on 68 points, leaving Kalpohin on 41 points and Wenchi Methodist on 30 points.
The final scores sent the Tamale camp into jubilation, with contestants and supporters celebrating a victory that had grown from a narrow two-point lead into a 27-point winning margin. The race for Tamasco, however, is far from over as they head on to meet stronger contenders on the One-Eighth stage.
