The Paramount Chief of Bawku has called for the immediate review of certain cultural practices that impede the country’s progress.
Naba Asigri Abugrago Azorka II during the 33rd annual Samanpiid Festival in Bawku in a documented speech laid out several practices that according to him, need to be looked at by the government.
These include "early marriages, child trafficking and abuse, widowhood rite, organisation of expensive and elaborate funeral performances" among many others.
Mr Patrick Adagudugu who spoke on behalf of the Paramount Chief stated that the community is negatively affected by these practices that have failed to stand the test of time.
Hence, “let us come together and fight these practices by working closely with religious leaders and traditional authorities as well as NGOs,” he admonished.
Meanwhile, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Hawa Ninchema has applauded the Electoral Commission, political parties and security agencies for their role in ensuring a peaceful election.
According to her, “the peaceful manner in which the just-ended elections were conducted in the municipality and other districts speaks volume.”
On the matter of development, she urged the traditional council to provide the state with lands to be used for developmental projects.
