The People’s National Convention (PNC) has asked President Akufo-Addo to appoint more women during his second term in office.
A statement signed by the party’s General Secretary, Janet Nabla observed that during President Akufo-Addo’s first term females were under represented in almost every sectors of his appointments including; Ministers, Deputies, MMDCEs, Directors, Ambassadors, Board Members.
Citing the example of South Africa President, Cyril Ramaphosa who has ensured that he has equal gender representation in his cabinet, Madam Nabla insisted that President Akufo-Addo does same and appoint at least 50 per cent women in his cabinet.
This, according to her, will show Ghanaian women that the constant emphasis of ‘we care about women and children’ is not just a lip service but something that is workable.
“According to statistics from the Electoral Commission, more women registered and voted in the 2020 elections than men and, therefore, should not be pushed to the backbenchers when it comes to appointments.
“The President who happens to be d Human Rights lawyer should be guided by the constitution of Ghana when doing appointments especially the directive principles of state policy Article 35(6b) of a 1992 constitution which insist that gender lenses should be adopted when recruiting or appointing,” she said.
The General Secretary then added, “The days of promises are over and women are now looking for delivery.”
