A professor at the Centre for Tropical Clinical Pharmacology, says that the coronavirus vaccine is not enough to keep people safe from the virus.
According to Alex Dodoo, although the vaccine will help curb the spread of the virus it will not completely eradicate it. Hence, the need for the general public to practice the safety protocols set out the government and the World Health Organization (WHO).
He said, "we have daily discussions with the Ghanaian people on the fact that a vaccine is coming. It can do A or B but it is not a magic bullet that cures all things Covid.
"If you take the vaccine and you are yet to have your booster dose or your second dose, you can still be infectious and can still pass on the virus," he stressed.
His comment comes on the heels of the increasing number of Covid-19 cases in Ghana.
Currently, the country has recorded 791 new cases, 70,046 confirmed cases, 449 deaths and a total of 63,502 recoveries.
Speaking on JoyNews, Mr Dodoo encouraged Ghanaians to participate in the vaccination process to help combat the spread of the virus.
“Our belief is that if enough of us take it (vaccine), we have less likelihood of getting it (coronavirus). The virus will disappear and then we have the herd immunity and the protection.”
Director-General of the Ghana Standards Authority further urged health workers and the government to educate the Ghanaian populace on the vaccine.
"Now we the health care workers, technical agencies and government have to give stability and confidence. However, there are so many unknowns that we need to make the public aware."
