The Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr Patrick Kuma Aboagye has revealed that 23 schools in the Greater Accra Region have recorded active Covid-19 cases.
Speaking at a press conference, Monday, he indicated that out of 166 suspected cases, a total number of 39 students have tested positive of the deadly coronavirus.
He further added that 12 teachers and 4 non-teaching staff of the various schools have also been recorded with the virus, bringing the active cases in schools in Greater Accra to 55.
So far there hasn’t been any recoveries or fatalities recorded.
“23 schools in Greater Accra has so far reported 56 cases and no fatality. And I must say that parents are duly been informed,” Dr Kuma Aboagye stated.
Following the reopening of schools, the Ghana Health Service announced that Senior Secondary Schools were producing the highest number of Covid-19 cases.
Currently, the Senior Secondary Schools with the largest hotspots are within the Upper West, Western, Greater Accra and Eastern regions.
Recently the Executive Director of National Schools Inspectorate Authority (NaSIA) disclosed that 37 more Covid-19 cases have been recorded at the Akosombo International School in the Eastern Region.
As of January 28 2021, a total of 553 samples have been tested with 82 positives. The cases were made up of 73 students, and 9 staff.
On January 31 2021, a total of 55 samples were collected from the students and tested with 13 confirmed as positive.
Mr Kuma Aboagye however, assured parents that the Covid-19 outbreak in the schools are being handled according to state instituted safety protocols.
"The national and the regional team has visited the school, done our assessment, given our recommendation on how to improve social distancing among other safety protocol to cut down spread.
"All of them are well and isolated and those who are close contact are still being observed so that we can contain the spread," he noted.
