The legal team of the petitioner in the Assin North MP’s dual citizenship case is asking why the NDC is worried about the court processes being used to adjudicate the matter involving the Assin North MP.
The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, indicated after the court proceedings on Tuesday, the party would resist all attempts by the NPP to use technicalities to remove the MP for Assin North, Joe Gyaakye Quayson, from Office.
Even though the Supreme Court has set July 27, for its decision in an application before it filed by the Assin North MP, the National Chairman, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, said the people of Assin North should not be denied a representation because the NPP needed to increase its numbers in Parliament.
But responding to the comments of the NDC National Chairman, a member of the petitioner’s legal team, Henry Nana Boakye, indicated that the same processes that the former MP for Bawku was taken through are the same process Mr Joe Gyaakye Quayson is being taken through and the NDC should stay strong and use the legal processes.
“Adamu Sakande owed allegiance to the UK and Ghana, an illegality relative to the country’s electoral laws, and got punished. We believe that Joe Gyaakye Quayson finds himself in the same situation and should be subjected to the same processes,” he said.
He asked: “Has the law changed? Have we repealed that law that sent Adamu to jail? When it happened in Bawku, clearly, the NDC benefited. Why are they seeking to reprobate and approbate on the same issue?”
Nana Boakye believes, the Assin North MP’s team are out of steam on the issue currently pending in court and are only clutching to straws.
Judgment in the matter was supposed to have been delivered on Wednesday, July, 28, but has been deferred to the 28th of June in deference to the Supreme Court as the Assin North MP has filed processes before the Apex Court seeking to change the course of events at the High Court.
