Foreign Policy and Security analyst, Adib Saani has called on the various Security and Intelligence Units to act swiftly following Russia’s attack on Ukraine.
He insisted that these units should have gathered more intelligence from the foreign front during the build-up to the Ukraine crisis.
The security arms should have acted early enough to access the situation. This would have helped the Government to make arrangements to evacuate Ghanaians living in Ukraine, he said on the back of the recent attack launched on Ukraine by Russia.
“The research department of the Intelligence Unit should have gathered enough information on whether Russia will attack Ukraine or not which would have helped in bringing Ghanaians in Ukraine back early, but unfortunately it seems the leaders are being more reactive than proactive,” he told Emefa Adeti on Prime Morning.
Russian President, Vladimir Putin has launched an unprecedented attack on Ukraine. The move comes after Putin ordered troops into two pro-Russian, breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine on Monday.
There have been multiple reports of explosions, bombings, and Russian Military vehicles entering Ukraine from various parts of the border with Russia, with a growing number of casualties being counted on both sides.
Following this development, Ghanaian students in the region have sent home appeals for them to be evacuated. Government in response has asked them to seek safe places of abode in the interim, while it works to ensure their safety in the country.
In a statement announcing this, the Foreign Affairs Ministry said it is doing its best to guarantee the wellbeing of Ghanaians.
“The Government of Ghana is gravely concerned about the security and safety of our over 1,000 students and other Ghanaians in Ukraine as we engage the authorities, our relevant diplomatic missions, and our honorary consul on further measures,” it said.
Reacting to this, the Security analyst insisted that, it’s the responsibility of the Government to ensure the safety of its citizens whether home or abroad.
He added that the situation can be described as ‘war’ so the Government should not take chances because anything can happen at any time.
