One person has been confirmed dead in a gun battle at Kokrobite in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.
Two other persons, including a 15-year-old boy, who sustained gunshot wounds and injuries are currently being treated at a hospital.
It is reported that the two factions involved in the gun battle were fighting over who had the right to perform rituals to lift the ban on drumming and noise making, which ended on Thursday, June 9.
“One faction warned the other not to engage in drumming and noise-making, since a chief of the town is dead.
“But that didn’t go down well with members of the other faction who took up arms and started firing, resulting in the death of one, while two others – including a 15-year-old boy – sustained gunshot wounds,” a resident told Citi News.
A physician assistant at the Kokrobite Health Centre, Jerry Nunoo, says the two victims would be transferred to the Weija Gbawe Municipal Hospital for further treatment.
He said, “two victims were brought here after the gun battle – a 38-year-old woman and a 15-year-old boy. The boy suffered a puncture wound on the right arm and the lady has a punctured wound on both thighs.”
The Kokrobite Police have visited the community and restored calm, although the culprits are still unknown.
Ban on drumming and noise making
The ban on drumming and noise making started on Monday, May 9 and ended on Thursday, June 9, 2022.
A statement from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) charged all persons, towns and villages in the Ga Traditional Area to cooperate and comply with the directive.
During the period, churches were urged to hold their activities within their premises and refrain from using musical instruments.
The positioning of loud speakers outside the premises of churches, mosques and pubs were also banned, while road evangelists ceased their activities.
“Other guidelines by the Ga Traditional Council (GTC) included a ban on funeral rites and their related activities.”
