Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), George Afriyie, says the association has not put in place a solid plan to help the various national teams succeed when they compete in continental and global tournaments.

In 2022, none of the national teams under GFA’s guidelines was able to impress Ghanaians with a host of poor results in various competitions and qualifiers.

Among these, were the Black Stars’ failure to make it out of the group stage of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations as well as the 2022 World Cup while the Black Galaxies also exited the CHAN tournament in the quarterfinals, losing to Niger.

In women’s game, the Black Princesses also suffered humiliation at the U-20 World Cup while the Black Queens failed to qualified for the AFCON with the U-17’s receiving a two-year ban after their encounter in the qualifiers against Morocco.

Speaking on Joy Sports’ Prime Take, Afriyie said, “If you lay a good foundation, then you can anticipate and expect that in competitions like the CHAN [you can achieve success].”

“You first have to look at our local league, our juvenile setup, the juvenile national teams, which are supposed to be the base where the players will be promoted into various national teams especially the senior ones; be it CHAN or the Black Stars. For me, looking at what is going on, it will be very difficult to be too hopeful that going into a competition like the CHAN or the World Cup we were going to do very well.

“I think we have not laid a solid foundation to merit our hope for successes in various competitions. For me, we have not done that,” he added.

Afriyie was Kurt Okraku’s competitor during the last GFA elections.
