The Minority Leader in Parliament has served notice that all NDC MPs will not be in the House or participate in its business on any day the Assin North MP, James Gyakye Quayson is to appear in court.
Dr Cassiel Ato Forson said all the NDC MPs will accompany the embattled MP in court to show their support.
“I wish to serve notice that the entire minority group will accompany our colleague to court today and any other day that he is to appear in court.”
"We are solidarising with our colleague, I urge the government to listen to the good people of Assin North and do the right thing," he said.
Speaking at the Swearing-in ceremony of the MP, Dr Forson congratulated Mr Gyakye Quayson for his massive victory in the recent by-election and also thanked the people of Assin North for their honest vote and support.
“It was therefore not surprising that the good people of Assin North reaffirmed their confidence in him at the just ended election on June 27, 2023, with a wider margin."
“They voted massively for him and he obtained a whopping 57.56% of the valid vote cast,” he said.
He added that Ghanaians have witnessed poor governance by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), therefore just like how the people of Assin North were not lured and intimated by threats from the ruling party, he believes the same victory will reflect in the 2024 national elections.
“The people of Assin North have sent a clear message to all politicians and the government of the day in particular that they cannot be persuaded by sharing of money nor be intimated by threats,"
“It is the same message that Ghanaians are sending to all of us that in the year 2024, they will exercise their franchise based on their conscience and no amount of tricks nor threats will dissuade them from voting out the administration that we’re witnessing,” he said.
Earlier today, Parliament was filled with jubilation as the House swore in the Member of Parliament-elect, James Gyakye Quayson.
The euphoria ahead of the process emanated from just one side as most members of the Majority were absent.
Minority MPs were singing and chanting victory songs for their colleague while clad in all-white apparel.
On June 27, Mr Quayson who was ejected from Parliament following a Supreme Court decision annulling the 2020 constituency election, won the Assin North by-election with 17,245 votes representing 57.56% of valid votes.
His main rival, Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party polled 12,630 or 42.15% of valid votes to place second, while the Liberal Party of Ghana’s Bernice Enam Sefanu polled only 87 votes or 0.29%.
