The Rotary Club of Accra-East has commissioned two mechanized boreholes for two communities in the Suhum Municipality of Eastern Region as part of a project to provide safe drinking water for deprived communities.
The beneficiary communities are Omenako and Obretema.
The water facilities commissioned on saturday were funded by the Rotary Club of Accra-East with support from the Rotary Club Lake Spivey Clayton County, USA.
The President of the Rotary Club of Accra-East, Serge Sourou Oga said the two boreholes were constructed at a cost of GHC400,000 under the club's borehole project.
According to him, the beneficiary communities were selected after a needs assessment was conducted to determine the needs of the community.

"We received proposals from people including the assembly man for this area. We realized after a careful assessment that people lose their lives when crossing the highway in search of water, so we decided to come to sink the two mechanized water facilities for them"he explained.
Aileen Conteh of the Rotary Club of Lake Spivey Clayton County, USA in an interview disclosed that they have been collaborating with the Accra-East Rotary Club to alleviate poverty and improve on the health conditions of people through the provision such projects in deprived communities.
"We will continue to support deprived communities in terms of their health. It is the reason we decided to support Accra-East to get the mechanized water system done for the people."
As part of measures to ensure efficient maintenance of the two facilities, a committee was inaugurated to oversee and manage them.
The club also handed over hand washing facilities to the schools in the two communities.
The Chief of Obretema, Barima Banin Abrokwa appreciated the gesture by the club and encouraged other groups to support deprived communities.
