The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has issued a warning to persons living in flood-prone areas to relocate to higher ground as the intensity of the rain increases.
This caution comes after parts of the country experienced heavy rains on Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning.
The Deputy Director in charge of forecasting at GMET, Joseph Tetteh Portuphy, emphasised the need for people to take extra precautions during this period.
Speaking in an interview with Citi TV, he highlighted the likelihood of more rain in the coming days, indicating a potentially heightened risk of flooding in vulnerable areas.
The GMET's advice aims to mitigate the impact of flooding, which often causes significant property damage and poses risks to lives. By moving to higher ground, residents can reduce their exposure to floodwaters and minimize the likelihood of harm.
Mr Portuphy stressed the importance of preparedness and urged individuals and communities to stay informed about weather forecasts and heed warnings from relevant authorities.
“We should know that we are getting into the flooding period, and with any little rain, the ground will be saturated. Once the ground is saturated, any additional rain will cause a flash flood. So, this is the period that at least we need to desilt the gutters."
“And also make sure that at least those of us who are in houses, areas that are flood prone, the moment you hear that it is going to rain please, take caution and move to higher ground or find somewhere and go. After the rains, then you come back,” he said.
