The Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has pledged to introduce sustainable mining practices to tackle the environmental challenges caused by illegal mining activities.
He stated that his administration would prioritise responsible mining to ensure the protection of natural resources while supporting the livelihoods of miners.
Addressing party supporters at Akrokkeri in the Fomena Constituency during his campaign tour in the Ashanti Region, Mr Mahama recognised the significance of small-scale mining to the local economy.
He noted that while mining provides employment for many Ghanaians, its improper regulation has led to severe environmental degradation, including deforestation and water pollution.
Mr Mahama assured miners and communities that his government would implement robust policies to balance economic benefits with environmental preservation.
He emphasised that sustainable mining practices would not only protect the ecosystem but also enhance the long-term viability of the mining sector.
The former president reiterated his commitment to working closely with stakeholders to create a framework that promotes responsible mining and ensures that communities affected by mining activities reap significant benefits.
He urged all Ghanaians to support efforts aimed at restoring the environment and fostering a more sustainable future for the mining industry.
“I know that here in Adansi, you deeply value small-scale mining. The NDC will bring policies to support small-scale miners and ensure the land is preserved for future generations,” Mr Mahama stated.
