Ghanaian football icon Alberta Sackey will be among the esteemed legends attending the 2024 CAF Awards in Marrakech, Morocco, on Monday.
The prestigious event, set to take place at the Palais des Congrès at 6:00 pm Ghana time, celebrates Africa’s football excellence and honours the continent's outstanding players, coaches, and teams over the past year.
Alberta Sackey, a trailblazer in Ghanaian women’s football, remains a revered figure in African football history and has been invited by the continent's football governing body for the event.
As a member of the Black Queens, she was instrumental in Ghana’s historic qualifications for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 1999 and 2003.
Her exceptional skill and leadership on the field earned her the title of African Women’s Footballer of the Year in 2002, cementing her legacy as one of the continent’s finest players.
The CAF Awards will also bring together a constellation of African football legends from various generations, including former South African striker Portia Modise, who netted over 100 goals for her country, and Equatorial Guinea’s Genoveva Añonman, another standout in women’s football.
The presence of these icons underscores the growth and achievements of women’s football in Africa.
Alberta Sackey’s inclusion among these celebrated figures is a recognition of her contributions to the game and her role in inspiring future generations of female footballers.
The ceremony will also feature legendary male players like Seydou Keita of Mali, a key figure in FC Barcelona’s golden era, and Egypt’s Mohamed Zidan, known for his flair and back-to-back AFCON triumphs in 2008 and 2010.
Other notable attendees include Kenya’s Victor Wanyama and Angola’s Fabrice Akwa, reflecting the diversity of talent that has shaped African football.
Ghana's Abdul Aziz Issah is in contention for goal of the Year. His stunning strike in the CAF Confederation Cup against FC Lobito earned him a nomination.
