In a heart-wrenching and emotional turn of events, three nursing mothers who were detained for over a month at the Ketu South Municipal Hospital due to their inability to settle medical bills have finally found relief.
This was made possible by the benevolence of the Tanko Foundation, in collaboration with the Duamenefa Foundation, during a special donation event.
For these mothers, the past month had been a painful ordeal, as they were forced to remain at the hospital after delivery, unable to return home with their newborns due to unpaid debts.
Speaking anonymously to the media, one of the mothers tearfully recounted her struggles. She revealed how the father of her child abandoned her and shirked all responsibility, leaving her to face the burden alone.
Her voice cracked as she expressed her gratitude for the intervention by the Tanko Foundation, which not only cleared her medical debt but also brought hope and dignity back into her life.
“I don’t know what I would have done if they hadn’t come to my rescue. The shame, the fear, and the pain I felt every day were unbearable. The Tanko Foundation has given me and my baby a fresh start,” she shared, wiping away tears.

During the donation ceremony, Emmanuel Atokple, a representative of the Tanko Foundation, explained the foundation’s longstanding commitment to supporting the less privileged in the Volta Region.
He highlighted the urgency of the mothers’ situation, which compelled the foundation’s founder, Gabriel Kwamigah Tanko Atokple, to step in and clear the debts.
“Mr. Tanko has not only cleared the hospital bills but has also ensured that these mothers can return home with dignity,” Emmanuel stated.
“In addition, we have donated essential items such as rice, baby food, toiletries, diapers, and an undisclosed sum of money to help the mothers start afresh. As we usher in the New Year, we want these families to experience the joy and love of the season.”
The gesture did not end with the nursing mothers. Emmanuel also announced that the Tanko Foundation, in collaboration with the Duamenefa Foundation, had extended their generosity to the children’s ward of the hospital.
A separate donation, including food and drinks, was made to the ward to ensure that the children and their families could also celebrate the festive season in comfort and happiness.
The Administrator of the Ketu South Municipal Hospital, Alex Hlotsi, expressed deep appreciation for the Tanko Foundation’s timely intervention.
“This is not just an act of charity; it is a lifeline for these mothers and their families. It also alleviates the financial strain on the hospital,” he said.
However, he took the opportunity to appeal to other benevolent organizations and individuals to support the hospital in addressing a critical need: the establishment of a dental unit.
“We have identified a place for the dental unit, but we lack the logistics and equipment to set it up. Our internally generated funds are insufficient, so we are calling on anyone who can help to come to our aid,” Mr. Hlotsi stated.
The Tanko Foundation’s impact on the lives of these nursing mothers and their newborns is a testament to the power of compassion and community. The foundation’s consistent efforts to give back to society, particularly to the vulnerable, have made a significant difference in the Volta Region.
For the three mothers, the end of their detention marked a new beginning filled with hope and gratitude. Their story serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by the less privileged and the transformative power of philanthropy.
As they left the hospital with their babies in their arms, they carried not only the weight of motherhood but also the assurance that thanks to the Tanko Foundation, they would not face their struggles alone.
