Acting Spokesperson to President John Dramani Mahama, Felix Ofosu Kwakye, has affirmed the President’s unwavering stance against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
Speaking on JoyFM's Super Morning Show on Tuesday, January 21, Mr Ofosu Kwakye highlighted President Mahama's commitment to decisively addressing the menace, which has plagued Ghana's environment and water bodies.
“President Mahama has always abhorred galamsey and its devastating impact on our natural resources. He will not tolerate any form of illegality that jeopardises the lives and livelihoods of Ghanaians,” Mr Kwakye Ofosu stated.
He emphasised that the President is prepared to implement robust measures to eliminate the practice and restore degraded lands.
Contrasting this with the approach of former President Nana Akufo-Addo, Mr Ofosu Kwakye suggested that the previous administration failed to demonstrate the same level of resolve.
“The Akufo-Addo administration claimed to fight galamsey, but the outcomes were less than satisfactory. President Mahama will not make empty promises; he is committed to concrete action,” he said.
He further noted that President Mahama's strategy involves both enforcement and community engagement, ensuring that alternative livelihoods are provided to those affected by the clampdown on galamsey.
“The fight against illegal mining requires a holistic approach, and President Mahama will ensure that all stakeholders are involved in finding sustainable solutions,” Mr Ofosu Kwakye concluded.
