The minority caucus in Parliament has accused the Mahama government of misusing state institutions to persecute and intimidate members of the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.
In a strongly worded statement, the minority, while upholding accountability, condemned the abuse of power and persecution, saying it undermined democratic principles
"The minority caucus unequivocally condemns the escalating misuse of State Institutions by the NDC government to intimidate and persecute political opponents," the statement said.
"This alarming trend not only undermines our democratic principles but also diverts attention from the pressing issues that this government promised to address."
The statement said the Mahama government has chosen to prioritise political witch-hunts in order to divert the attention of Ghanaians from its inability to deliver on the numerous electoral promises made.
"This government is prioritising political witch-hunts instead of focusing on delivering the promises they made to Ghanaians. The NDC promised to "reset" the economy and alleviate the severe cost-of-living crisis by implementing a 24-hour economy, create sustainable jobs for the youth and reduce unemployment rates, invest in modernising the nation's infrastructure, among others."
"Yet, rather than focusing on these critical commitments—promises they cannot run away from—they have detracted from this mandate and are now weaponising State Institutions to target political opponents, foster division and divert attention from their inability to govern effectively."
The statement also condemned comments by President Mahama that the Akufo-Addo government ''criminally mismanaged'' Ghana' economy, and further accused the President of making the statement to set the stage for state-sponsored persecution of opponents.
