Dr. Nana Anima Wiafe Akenteng, a Ghanaian media practitioner and lecturer, has underscored the significance of traditional marriage in Ghanaian culture.
In an insightful interview on Daybreak Hitz with Andy Dosty, she indicated that marriage goes beyond the couple.
"Marriage has always been an interesting topic under cultural studies because it involves everybody. It's not only about the couple who are getting married into that union, but it involves the extended family and it goes beyond. Because if the marriage works, if it goes well, the woman is happy, the man is happy, it affects the children and others," she said.
She also shared light on how a spouse is selected for marriage in the traditional setting.
"In the olden days, it is the family that looked for a wife. The woman's family will find out if the man had the qualities they seek. They consider being hardworking, very respectful, God-fearing, coming from a good family, affluence," she said.
Dr. Anima further highlighted the importance of compatibility and communication in marriage.
"So we need to mention all those basic things before the union or the ceremony itself is done. It's also very important that, before they do the union, there is compatibility between the two characters, you have to know each other's personality. Let's say if the person is somebody who is sanguine and you are melancholic and all of that, you need to know,” she explained.
She also emphasized the significance of intimacy in marriage stating, "before they come together, apart from other social contacts, other things that, we look for in the marriage, one thing that is very important is the sexual assets to the person. Because I mean, let me say that if there's no sexual assets, what is the marriage for?"
She concluded by highlighting the challenges of modern relationships.
"But nowadays what happens is that, we can just meet on social media, funeral, parties, just out there and we just get into it, which is an aspect that is not helping,” she noted.
Dr. Nana Anima Wiafe Akenteng's insights on traditional marriage in Ghanaian culture emphasize the importance of compatibility, communication, and intimacy in building a strong and lasting relationship.
Her comments also highlight the challenges of modern relationships and the need for a more thoughtful and intentional approach to marriage.
