US-based Ghanaian artiste Amaarae lifted the flag of Ghana high over the weekend when she performed at the 2025 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival at Empire Polo Club on April 13, 2025 in Indio, California.
Coachella is a major music and arts festival held in California, USA. The festival has grown substantially over the last decade and in 2012 the organisers launched a second weekend to accommodate everyone who wanted to experience the festival. Coachella is now two separate events, held over two consecutive weekends.
The first week of this year's event happened from April 11-13. The second part will take place from April 18-20, 2025.
Apart from singing her own songs, Amaarae also shone some light on Ghanaian music by performing songs from Eazzy, Joey B, La Même Gang, Asakaa Boys, among other Ghanaian acts.
During her performance, the music diva was heard loudly chanting the name of Ghana, asking the audience to wave their Ghana flag, as the flag prominently gets displayed on the stage.
“A lotta the music you just heard is from my home country, Ghana. I love my country so much,” she said.
Amaarae made history as the first Ghanaian artiste to perform a solo set at Coachella.
Another highlight of her performance was when she cut off her long hair right on stage.
She also took the opportunity to announce that her new album, Black Star, will be released this summer.
Amaarae is Ghanaian-American singer-songwriter who shot into the limelight in 2017 when she released her Passionfruit Summers EP.
She also has works such as The Angel You Don’t Know EP released in 2020 and Fountain Baby released in 2023.
Born Ama Serwah Genfi, Amaarae lived in Ghana, Atlanta, and New Jersey during her formative years.
In 2023, she won Record of the Year award at the Ghana Music Awards with her song 'Sad Girls Luv Money' which features Moliy. She has since won several spurs both in Ghana and on the international music scene.
