The Minority Caucus in Ghana’s Parliament has donated GH¢200,000 to assist victims of the recent fire outbreak at the Adum Blue Light Market in Kumasi.
The financial support is intended to offer immediate relief to traders whose goods and livelihoods were destroyed in the devastating blaze.
A brief ceremony was held in Kumasi for the presentation of the donation.
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who led the delegation, expressed his deepest sympathies to the affected traders, acknowledging the emotional and financial toll the incident has taken.
He reiterated the need for solidarity in times of crisis, stating that the Minority Caucus could not stand idly by in the face of such loss.
Mr Afenyo-Markin urged the government to replicate the assistance provided in past emergencies by utilising the Contingency Fund to bring swift relief to victims.
He stressed that the state must act with urgency and compassion to restore hope to those affected.
“The government must show the same level of urgency and compassion as it has in other similar tragedies,” he remarked.
Receiving the donation on behalf of the traders, Mr Joseph Bobie Ansah, Chairman of the market traders, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Minority Caucus. He described the intervention as timely and crucial to the recovery process.
“We are deeply grateful for this support. It will go a long way to ease the burden on our members who have lost everything,” he stated.
The fire incident, which destroyed several stalls and merchandise, has left many traders in despair. The donation by the Minority Caucus has brought a glimmer of hope as victims begin to rebuild their lives.
Calls for government action continue to grow as stakeholders emphasise the need for a coordinated and compassionate response to such disasters.
