Former world boxing champion Amir Khan has commended Sharaf and Shahid Mahama, sons of former President John Mahama, for their instrumental role in bringing the Battle of the Beasts boxing event to Accra.
The high-profile event, held last Friday, and headlined by the WBC Africa title bout between American Andrew Tabiti and Ghana’s Jacob Dickson, was a collaborative effort between Khan’s promotional company, AK Promotions, and Legacy Rise Sports, owned by the Mahama brothers.
Khan credited Sharaf and Shahid for opening his eyes to Ghana’s untapped potential as a destination for international boxing.
“Many promoters wouldn’t even consider Ghana,” Khan said.
“The focus has shifted to Saudi Arabia and other big-name venues. But Sharaf and Shahid reached out to me and encouraged us to take a chance on Ghana. They’ve been incredibly supportive.”
Khan noted that the decision to stage the event in Accra was not only a bold move but also a historic one.
“It’s a new market with so much promise. I wanted to be part of something groundbreaking, and thanks to the President’s sons, we made it happen.”
