The Spokesperson for the Ministry of Energy, Richmond Rockson, has disclosed that over 200 Ghana-made transformers have been procured by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to improve electricity distribution across the country.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Friday, Mr. Rockson confirmed that the purchase was made at the directive of Energy Minister John Jinapor.

He explained that the acquisition forms part of broader efforts to stabilise the national power supply and address distribution challenges.

"Any industry player or any resident who has been observing the space over the last two, three months can attest that we have a fairly stable power supply. This is because of some of the interventions the ministry has put together. Let me give you an example, for over two years, ECG has not done major maintenance work, so we have areas that have had challenges with transformers, the minister has to direct them (ECG) to buy over 200 transformers to be able to change malfunctioning ones, now a lot of areas have stable power because they have new transformers."

He explained that the transformers were recently procured and are currently in use, contrary to claims that they were purchased earlier and left unused.

Mr. Rockson also mentioned that the transformers are locally made in Ghana.

He added that the decision to prioritise local production supports not only the power sector but also the domestic manufacturing industry, creating jobs and boosting confidence in Ghanaian engineering capabilities.
