Lawyers for Ms. Yaa Serwaa Gyan have responded to recent reports and the Public Accounts Committee’s (PAC) call for her arrest over allegations of failing to return to post after study leave.
In a statement, the legal team rejected claims that their client had sought to evade obligations under her service bond. They said that while media reports quoted the bond value as GH¢120,347.03, the actual contractual figure was GH¢51,522.51.
The lawyers explained that Ms. Gyan returned to work at the Ministry of Energy after completing her studies, but later applied for and was granted leave without pay in 2023 due to health challenges and family issues.
They further noted that deductions have been made from her bank account towards repayment of the bond, and that the outstanding balance is now significantly reduced. According to the statement, Ms. Gyan has indicated her readiness to settle the remaining amount in full.
The legal representatives also said her time at the Ministry was affected by a hostile work environment, which influenced her decision to take leave.
While acknowledging the oversight role of the PAC and the Auditor-General, they insisted that any action taken must follow due process and respect her constitutional rights, including the presumption of innocence and fair hearing.
The lawyers pledged to engage with the Ministry of Energy, the Auditor-General’s Department, and the PAC to clarify the matter and work toward resolution.
They further appealed to the media and public to report accurately and sensitively, stressing that Ms. Gyan remains committed to accountability and the settlement of any verified obligations.
